Cyanide & Happiness, the popular comic book strip recently announced plans to launch an adventure game. Based on a similar type in which the recent South Park games have seen success, the game was set to combine their animation style seamlessly with an adventure game atmosphere.
To raise funds for the project, the team at Cyanide & Happiness launched a Kickstarter with a rather lofty target of $300,000. Less than a week later that target has been met, and indeed, completely smashed.
This isn’t the first time that the company has used Kickstarter as in 2016 they launched a successful campaign for a ‘Cards Against Humanity’ style game. This experience may have helped them gain the knowledge for another campaign, but I doubt even they were expecting such a massive response.
The card game, in brief, revolved around players having to create comic book strips. Not an entirely original concept, but one in keeping with the franchise.
Beginning life initially as an online comic strip, their biggest success came through their animated shorts on YouTube.
One of my favourites you can see below.
The proposed game looks to emulate the animation style and has fans of the series, including myself, really excited.
While the animation series is nowhere near as controversial as South Park, it does have its close moments. The best of Cyanide & Happiness is often seen in their truly unexpected or off-the-wall moments.
At the time of writing, nearly 10,000 backers have pledged $350,000. With 23 days left to run, I would be surprised if this didn’t top the $500,000 mark which would, for a project of this size, represent quite a significant achievement.
The Kickstarter page can be viewed by clicking the link here. It is very rare that I back a project, however, this one does have my endorsement. As a long time fan of Cyanide & Happiness, I think that their humour could easily translate to a game.
I also think, in addition, that the tier awards in this Kickstarter are genuinely attractive. I often criticise many Kickstarter projects for being too ambitious or, indeed, too overly complicated in their tier awards. That is something which, perhaps due to their experience, they have successfully avoided in my opinion.
