Whilst this is not a feature that we would normally cover when reviewing a NAS, this feature is a major part of the MyDitto package and so is worth us taking a further look at to see how well it works.  There are a couple of ways through which you can access the system remotely, the first of which is via the secure authentication keys which comes included but as highlighted on the front of the box, the system is also iOS compatible allowing for use via an iPhone/iPod/iPad remotely.

Taking a look at the iOS login to start, the MyDitto app is free to download from the App Store – my-Ditto in the iTunes store. Once downloaded onto your device of choice, login to your NAS is achieved via a username (email) and password field.

Once the MyDitto has been located and is connected, the app initially moves to the file browsing screen where you can navigate through the file system and view individual files.

For systems that contain a lot of documents for example, there is also a search function.

Another neat feature with the app is the ability to stream media content like you can with the desktop app across the internet. Naturally the speed of buffering is dependant on the upload speed where the MyDitto is located.

Last of all in the information section you can view certain details about the NAS including how much storage space has been used.

The other way to remotely connect to the Ditto is via the USB keys that come included with the device. As we’ve seen there are two keys (one grey and one white) with the grey key allowing for full administrative access wherever you are as well as the same access that you get with the white key.

The main window shows to the left the NAS file system and on the right the computers file system that you are using to connect. Files can be copied between each of these with ease.

Like the iOS app, media content can be streamed from the NAS straight to your desktop with out prior download required.

Another feature that we see with the desktop software is the ability to backup your system to the NAS from wherever you are, ideal for business people that are one the move with valuble data.

The settings window is only available when using the grey master key and this allows additionals users to be configured, backup and proxy settings and also the systems current status.
