Most of you have probably never seen the Dark Web, and that’s probably a good thing considering the content’s notorious reputation. However, even though the Dark Web is feared and criticized right now, things might not always be this way, especially if the free press gets involved. Sources indicate that the Dark Web has just received its first major news publication in the form of ProPublica, which is actually the first noteworthy news site to have a version that runs as a “hidden service” on the Tor network. When he was asked why he wanted to implement this special service, Mike Tigas, ProPublica’s web developer, has stated: “We don’t want anyone to know that you came to us or what you read.”
The statement obviously makes sense, as the entire Tor network is based on anonymity and privacy. Moreover, with countries such as China having strict censorship rules, the publication can now appeal to a wider audience as readers can feel safer while reading its Pulitzer-winning editorials.
This is definitely not the first news service to set up a presence on the Tor network, and it probably won’t be the last. Other noteworthy services who are accessible on the Dark Web include Facebook, even though the social media’s special Tor version is regarded as an experiment right now.
