The team behind DayZ have been fairly committed for the last 6 months that they planned to release the 1.0 release before the end of the year. Given that this game had spent over 5 years in also (with the brief latter portion in beta) I have to admit, I was sceptical. In fact, as a whole, I’ve been very critical of this game for the last 3 years, but with very good reason.
Well, if you managed to avoid the hype that this game initially created, there is good news for PC owners. To celebrate the full release, DayZ has gone free from now until Sunday!
With the final release now made, DayZ has improved massively since it’s initial launch over 5 years ago. In fact, you could argue that this game is a world apart from where it was a year ago. The real question is, however, is the game worth playing? Well, having tried the release out for a few hours today, my answer is, sadly, no.
While it is better, DayZ feels incredibly clunky, it still has bugs and above all, it’s lost its relevancy.
I should add the caveat that I would openly recommend you to try it. This is just a PC release, but it is free until Sunday! Go nuts! Try it out for yourself and if you think I’m wrong, that’s fine. I can’t help, however, that after the initial hype has settled down, DayZ will ultimately be remembered only as the perfect example of how not to manage an early access game project.
You could argue that the franchise single-handedly created the revival of the ‘zombie survival’ gaming genre. You could maybe even say it was the genesis of Battle Royale. For me though, it has since been surpassed by games that were started after this begun it’s alpha and released years before now.
