DDR5 Prices Appear to be Plunging (And Why Buying Soon Might be a Good Idea!)

With Intel’s Alder Lake-S processor platform bringing with it the formal consumer introduction of DDR5 memory modules late last year, it hasn’t been without its problems. And by this, what I really mean is expense! – And no, this isn’t merely limited to the purchase of a new motherboard and processor. Perhaps surprisingly, DDR5 memory has been one of the biggest stand-out costs that have, so far, likely prevented many people from making the transition. – Put simply, it’s quite possibly represented one expense too far!

Following research conducted by ComputerBase, however, if you have been planning to get some new DDR5 memory modules, it might be time to strike as it would appear that, at least for the moment, prices are plunging!

DDR5 Prices Drop Dramatically!

According to the research, the cost of DDR5 memory modules (specifically in Germany), has fallen by around €100 since the start of the year. – The modules themselves are, of course, exactly the same, but the short version is that the memory is now available to purchase for roughly half as much as 6 months ago!

Why are prices falling so rapidly though? Well, the most obvious answer to this is demand. Hype for Alder Lake-S (the only consumer platform that currently supports DDR5) has undoubtedly fallen quite significantly since its release last November. As such, consumers looking to make the transition have likely either already got what they want, or perhaps more likely, have been waiting for a moment like this to strike.

It’s a theory backed up by the fact that, over the exact same period, DDR4 prices have, remained pretty stable.

Time To Strike?

Now admittedly, it’s entirely possible that DDR5 prices may continue to fall for the next couple of months. With this in mind though, if you are planning to buy some new memory, it seems that this might now represent the perfect time to strike.

Why? Well, it comes down to what’s on the horizon. Intel’s 13th-gen Raptor Lake processors are set to release later this year which will clearly put new consumer demand on DDR5 modules. Perhaps more potently though, Ryzen 7000 (also set for release later this year) will see AMD make the formal (and seemingly exclusive) transition to the new memory format. – Put simply, if demand was high when Alder Lake-S dropped, it’s going to be even bigger when both Ryzen 7000 and Raptor Lake arrive around October/November this year!

And as we’ve all (sadly) come to know, when demand is high, prices go up! – So if you’re planning to go down the DDR5 road in the very near future, although I’m not saying this is a 100% solid piece of consumer advice, in my opinion, now might be the time to strike!
