Power Supplies

DeepCool Gamer Storm DQ850-M Power Supply Review

A Closer Look

The exterior packaging has a nice black/grey and turquoise design. The front of the box gives you a nice clear image of the power supply as well as highlighting the key features on offer. In terms of information, the front of the box is nice, clear and to the point. Exactly what you’d want from a power supply!

The back of the packaging is a little bland, but it still tells you everything you could want to know. All the key features are clearly itemised for you to read and in addition, DeepCool has also included the fan and efficiency rating charts. The latter is something to particularly commend as very few manufacturers do this.

One side of the box has been used to give you a diagram of the cables included. As this is a fully modular power supply, this information is very important and has been clearly displayed.

Finally, the othe side of the box gives you the full method for the output of the power. While this technical information won’t mean much to many of you, for those who take their power supplies very seriously, this is vital to know.

The Power Supply

The Gamer Storm DQ850-M has a nice clean crisp presentation. The matte-black really works well with the silver ‘Gamer Storm’ highlights. It’s also nice to see the logo has been lightly embossed into the edge of the power supply block. They’re all nice touches that make it look very professional.

In terms of overall aesthetics, this power supply is very nice to look at. While we’ll take a look at the ‘fancier’ aspects in a second, we should point out that all the technical information is provided to the top of the power supply. This is, again, a nice touch for those who place high importance on the technical specification of their PSU.

This power supply is the first in a very long time where some designs aesthetics have been put into the exhaust vents. You can see the Gamer Storm logo in the design and it looks fantastic. It wasn’t necessary and probably cost them significantly more to make than a standard vent, but it really sets this power supply apart from the pack.

The modular inputs are nicely spaced and as you can see in the picture below, are all itemised to help make sure you put the right cable in the right hole. In addition to this, you will also note the ‘back to back’ design which makes cable installation (and removal) a lot easier in practical terms.

The fan on the power supply looks excellent. The Gamer Storm branding has been worked into the design and this is, again, yet another feature that really makes this power supply stand out from the crowd.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again. It’s hard to make a power supply look good. In this case, though, DeepCool have knocked it out of the part with the Gamer Storm DQ850-M. The little design choices (which can be seen throughout the product) really add to a nice aesthetic presentation.

Interior

As this is advertised as having fully Japanese-capacitors, it’s important for us to take a look inside. In terms of de-lidding the GamerStorm DQ850-M this provided no difficulties and at the glance, everything looks good. Let’s take a bit of a closer look!

The interior of the power supply is generally well organised which each capacitor and component having a decent amount of ‘breathing room’. In fairness, we have seen tidier component layouts in the past, but overall we find nothing worrying here. There is only 1 excessive glue blop on the inside and in truth, we had expected to see a little more. As such, so far, so good!

A closer look at the main bulk capacitor confirms it to be Japanese. This model specifically is a Nichicon capacitor rated to 105C. We see this component quite a lot in power supplies and it has regularly proven to be an excellent performer. I mean, overlooking the fact that Nichicon has an excellent reputation, it wouldn’t be used so much, by so many, if it wasn’t excellent!

Based on this, and the smaller capacitors, we can confirm that the Gamer Storm DQ850-M does have 100% Japanese components.

A closer look at the fan confirms it to also be a DeepCool design. This isn’t particularly surprising given that DeepCool makes many system components. In terms of the actual fan itself, you will note the vented tips of the edge of the fan blades. This is a design that is getting DeepCool a lot of recognition. Particularly in their CPU coolers.
