Dell are one of the biggest computer suppliers in the world and had to admit that Windows 8 was no meeting expectations, nor was it the catalyst for PC market success that everyone had hoped for. However that’s not without a silver lining and with new hardware heading to the market this quarter as well as a new edition of Windows that is said to be new and improved, addressing many consumers issues with Windows 8 then things could be about to change.
“It is some of the things we have been talking about over the last few quarters, where you have competing devices in some cases. Windows 8 has been from our standpoint, not necessarily the catalyst to drive accelerated growth that we had hoped it would be,” said Brian Gladden, chief financial officer at Dell.
It’s not all doom and gloom for Dell of course and they’re still going strong in the PC market, but more people were expected to jump on Windows 8 and that simply isn’t the case as most people continue to upgrade to Windows 7.
With Haswell CPU’s and motherboards about to be released and both AMD and Nvidia ready to launch their new wave of graphics cards along side the new update for Windows 8 that will be coming over the next few months, this could be the boost the market needs and certainly the one companies like Dell will be wanting.
“We are encouraged by what is going to play out with new chipsets and some of the work that is going on within the Windows ecosystem to hopefully over the next few months create some catalysts,” said Mr. Gladden.
“We would expect to continue to see declines in PC demand [over the next few quarters year-over-year]. I think that we are trying to run the business based on that we be in a position where we are in this thing for the long-term and we position the business for success for the long-term,” concluded Mr. Gladden.
In short, the market isn’t going to turn around overnight, if ever so best plan ahead and find ways to adapt to the market, it’s a known fact PC sales have dropped but it’s still unknown if or when they’ll pick up again even if there have been some signs of improvement.
