ASUS is not the only company throwing their hat in the virtual reality headset ring since DELL also made a similar announcement during IFA 2017. The DELL Visor is a mixed reality headset using the same Microsoft HoloLens technology. The headset comes in white and has inside-out cameras built-in. This eliminates the need for external cameras and minimizes set up.
The Visor easily flips up for quick transition between the real and virtual world. It is also made to be very comfortable with thick padding on the forehead as well as the eye area. The headband itself is weight-balanced so that the pressure on the nose and cheeks is not straining. This is especially useful for longer periods of use. The entire headset itself weighs 1.3lbs.
There is also a convenient cable management clip to secure the cabling to the back of the headband. This opens up the user’s mobility and gives them greater freedom to move around. There is also a thumb-wheel at the back of the headset so that the fit is quickly adjustable.
The panel uses 2.89″ RGB subpixel LCD with 1440 x 1440 pixels per eye at 706 pixels-per-inch and at a refresh rate of 90Hz. The Visor has built-in gyroscope, accelerometer, and magnetometer.
The DELL Visor is available now for $349.99 USD, which is a lot cheaper then ASUS’ solution. However, the controllers are available separately. The DELL Visor package only contains the visor itself, connection cords and the documentation.
