Dell prepares to ship its first ultrabook

Dell has announced that it will start shipping its first ultrabook, the XPS 13, to the U.S. and Canada next week.

The XPS 13 is equipped with a 13″ Gorilla Glass screen and has officially been branded as an Intel ultrabook. It will ship with Intel’s Core processors based on the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture. It will become available next month for a starting price of $999 with a Core i5 processor.

According to Dell, the XPS 13 is packed in an 11″ frame to help save desk space. It weights 1.35 kilograms and is 6 mm thick. Battery lifetime allows for up to eight hours of use. The XPS 13 also supports up to 256GB of SSD storage and 4GB of RAM.

It will also come with Smart Connect technology which will keep the laptop connected to the internet even in sleep mode to allow for the emails and social network feeds to be updated.

The only problem is the price point, not only for the buyer but for Intel, as it wants ultrabook to be price at around $699 by the end of the year. As you may have judged for yourself, ultrabooks reaching over $800 are not looked into as much as the models under the $800 price point.
