DELL’s Kaby Lake-G Powered XPS 15 has a MagLev Keyboard

CES 2018 is currently underway and DELL is out of the gate showing off new Kaby Lake-G powered laptops. In case you have not heard the news, AMD and Intel have finally teamed up to create processors. It combines an 8th Generation Intel Core processor with AMD’s own Radeon RX Vega M graphics. DELL is the first to show off this solution in laptop form with the new XPS 15 2-in-1. It is available with either an Intel Core i5-8305G or an Intel Core i7-8705G processor. The entire system itself is just 16mm thick. Surprisingly, DELL is using a unique way when it comes to thermally managing such a slim system. The heatpipes inside actually uses Gore-Tex. This is the same material often found on winter jackets.

The Radeon RX Vega M GPU built-in has its own 4GB HBM2 memory aside from the 8GB or 16GB DDR4 2400MHz system memory pool. In terms of storage, users can choose between a 128GB SATA SSD for the base option. If users prefer a faster PCIe solution, they can also choose between 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. There are also two Thunderbolt 3 ports available, providing flexible connectivity options. Two additional USB 3.1 Type-C ports for storage are also available, plus a microSD card reader.

Infinity Edge Display

The 15.6 inch display is available with a 1920 x 1080 screen with 100% sRGB coverage for the base model. However, a 3200 x 1800 with 100% Adobe RGB color gamut option is also available. It is also the smallest InfinityEdge display notebook yet with stunningly thin bezels. These screens are also capacitive touch screens with active pen support.

MagLev Keyboard

As if the CPU and screen is not enough to impress you, the keyboard on this device is also unique. It may look and feel like a normal keyboard but the mechanism underneath relies on magnets. This provides feedback and controls the repulsion tactility when pressed. This allows for a deeper feeling when typing than what a 0.7mm mechanical travel would normally feel like.
