Demonetisation Day Lands On YouTube With Protests

Demonetisation Day Lands on YouTube

Back in January, YouTube, again, announced major changes to how monetization works on their website. Applying some quite significant changes, the result meant that thousands of low-profile YouTubers would lose what little income they did receive.

Allowing for a 30 day warning period, the demonetisation day has finally landed and in conjunction, many of these YouTuber’s have made their thoughts known.

What changes did YouTube make?

In the prior system, all YouTubers required to be monetized was a total of 10,000 channel views. A not entirely unreasonable figure and certainly one which would distinguish a channel of interest from a (no offense) a wannabe or poop-poster.

The new changes, in place now, however, required people to have at least 1,000 subscribers and at least 1,000 hours of viewed video. This again doesn’t sound too terrible, but it has, in one fell swoop, wiped out what probably represents the majority of those who did make an income from the website.

Protests Launched

In a report via Polygon, the change has seen a lot of low-level YouTubers band together with the hashtags, #DemonetizationDay, and #SmallerYouTubers. It is their hope that through grouping together they can look to raise awareness of others channels to hopefully bring attention to this, but also perhaps get some more people earning income.

What we would recommend!

Banding together is actually a smart move. One of the best solutions for YouTuber’s, however, might be taking that a step further. If two or three low-level content creators (of a similar theme) got together, they could create their own channel. In effect, pooling their talent they could very quickly qualify to achieve the requirements.

Admittedly, they probably would still be earning less and a degree of trust would be necessary, but some income is better than nothing.

What do you think? Is YouTube’s new policy unreasonable? What would be your solution? – Let us know in the comments!
