The PS5 is (Somehow) Sony’s Officially Fastest-Selling Console Ever

The PS5 has been in absolutely huge demand ever since it was released late last year, but due to a large combination of unfortunate circumstances, even nearly 9 months on, it’s still very difficult to actually get your hands on one of the systems. Well, not unless you’re willing to pay the ridiculous prices scalpers are still looking to shift them for. – Yes, the stock has never been anywhere near reaching the level of demand, but against what I suspect is a lot of expectations (my own included), following a report via Polygon, the PS5 has still somehow managed to become Sony’s fastest-selling console of all time!

PS5 Storms Sony’s Record Sales!

Following official figures released by Sony, they have confirmed that as of July 18th, the PS5 has achieved (give or take) 10 million sales. This has managed to comfortably beat the prior record set by the PS4, which took an additional 22 days to reach this 10M landmark. – What is perhaps most surprising though, is that while the PS4 was undoubtedly very popular when it was released back in 2013, it didn’t have anything close to the supply issues seen with the PS5.

Just on a personal level, I was easily able to get my PS4 for Christmas that year, whereas I only just managed to snag a PS5 for myself a couple of weeks ago.

Supply VS Demand!

While the global chipset shortage, COVID-19, and various shipping factors have undoubtedly hindered the initial sales of the PS5, it is still hard to deny that while Sony is attempting to get as many of them out there as possible, demand for this console has been unusually high. As such, managing to beat the PS4’s prior record is, quite frankly, exceptionally surprising.

It would, therefore, be very curious to speculate as to how much faster it would’ve attained this 10 million sale landmark had supply levels actually been reasonable decent. Despite the number of people still desperate to get their hands on this console, however, I think these figures clearly demonstrate that despite all the problems it has faced, the PS5 is still a colossally huge success for Sony!
