It’s (thankfully) been quite a long time since we last had a film based on the Mario Bros. franchise. In fairness, I don’t actually think the Bob Hoskins film is terrible. I honestly believe that it’s biggest crime (aside from clearly being written by someone who probably got told the plot of the game on the phone) was that it was so close to actually being good!
Well, last year we heard the first news that a new Mario film was in the works. The plus side was that it was likely going to be an animation and also that it was coming from Illumination. The studio behind the Despicable Me franchise.
Well, in a report via CNET, we have some updated news and it seems that the new Mario film is looking more and more likely to go down the animation road!
Well, firstly, this is just all in pre-production at the moment, so it may never happen. Nintendo has been very clear that if they can’t find a good story, they won’t make it! What we do know, however, is that if this is happening, we shouldn’t expect it before 2022!
An animated Mario film, with the right plot, could be fantastic. With the franchise being far better known than when the original film released as well, standards this time around are probably going to be a lot higher.
Let’s put it this way, it has a much better chance of working than it doesn’t as long as, as Nintendo is demanding, it has a half-decent story.
