Devil May Cry is one of those unusual franchises. Why is it unusual? Well, the fact that despite its popularity, it hasn’t been milked to death. In fairness, you could perhaps argue that (with the exception of Street Fighter 5’s garbage release) Capcom, generally speaking, are a good developer. Yes, I’m preparing myself for the vitriol of that statement.
It has been a while since we saw the last official release in the DMC series. To my knowledge the last being a re-release of the DMC 4.
A supposed leak has emerged, however, suggesting that Devil May Cry 5 might be in production.
Why supposed? Well, the bottom line is that it’s not confirmed. On the resetera website a poster by the name of ‘Son of Sparda’ has apparently leaked a confidential in-house communication at Capcom regarding the development. While the forum has been quick to acknowledge the lack of any authenticity, it has been posted with the understanding with the OP that they will be banned if found to be untrue.
I stress again, all of the below is not confirmed. Given the severity in which the post has been issued though, it is at least compelling.
Hideaki Itsuno, the designer of DMC 2, 3 and 4 has reportedly been working on a ‘secret project’ at Capcom. This is now unconfirmed as being DMC 5.
So, what are the rumors? Well, a release of the game is not expected until 2019, however, an official announcement will be anticipated in E3 2018. Initially intended to be announced at PSX in 2017, Capcom decided to push it back.
Development is suggested to have already been in the works for 2 years and, based on the release, this would make it the longest development cycle for a DMC game. In addition, the fact that it was planned for announcement at PSX initially would suggest that it may be a PlayStation exclusive. A trailer has already reportedly been created win a run time of 1 minute 50 seconds.
At this point, I do add again, this is all unconfirmed. I do, however, feel some indications of truth within this. For example, the details given are very specific and based on time frames, 2018/2019 would be about the right time for the next release (given that nothing has been announced as of yet).
I wouldn’t necessarily say its time to get onboard the hype train yet, and I will be the first to apologize if this turns out to be a hoax. There is, however, more to suggest that this is true than an elaborate hoax.
