DirectX 12 vs Direct X 11 Comparison Shows 50% Performance Increase

Yesterday was the Windows 10 live stream, where Microsoft dropped one big announcement after the other. The one that really stood out for me however was the DirectX 12 performance figures. A 50% increase in performance, which can also be related to a 50% reduction in power consumption on your GPU hardware when targeting the same frame rates. This is absolutely bonkers! If you’re graphics card gets hot while playing the latest games, just imagine if a simple driver update meant your hardware can take it easy to get the same levels of performance, all while saving you a noticeable amount on your electric bill.

The demo scene in the video is a little strange. Essentially the scene is constantly updated to become progressively more complicated until such time that the frame rate drops to zero and essentially freezes the rendering. DirectX 11 freezes up and DirectX 12 just keeps on rolling. Now this is obviously a vague test, as we don’t know the hardware behind the API and Microsoft will have no doubt found a way of making the numbers look better than they actually are; if only by a little. However, this is still a promising start and we look forward to seeing the graphics API in the real world.
