No Man’s Sky will probably go down in history as one of the worst video game launches and I cannot see the studio ever being taken seriously again. Also, Sean Murray’s vague responses were partly to blame and his disappearance from social media channels has only exacerbated the situation. Clearly, those who believed the hype are still angry with what transpired and feel misled.
In an unusual turn of events, some disgruntled owners of No Man’s Sky have launched a GoFundMe campaign raising money to combat cancer. This is a great way of turning something negative into a positive and the charity fundraiser has already amassed £1235 at the time of writing. This significantly higher than the original £500 goal. Here we can see details about the campaign in the creator’s own words:
Why is this happening?:
There was a game called No Mans Sky, announced in 2014, that captured the imagination of hundreds of thousands of people, even millions. It was very much a dream for the entire development process as features were promised, but many were not delivered on. Sean Murray, the managing director of the company and effectively the face of the marketing for this game straight up lied about a lot of stuff. And following him being caught out on his lies, with the game being released, he’s gone completely silent, and the game has been effectively abandoned. This may sound pessimistic in a sense, but the potential future of the game is very dire.
Why are we doing this?:
I’m Barky, I run the subreddit for the game. We’ve had a stickied post everyday for the last two weeks or so where we recount how long it’s been since Sean Murray or his studio spoke about the game. It’s been 90 days, so effectively 3 months which lines up about right with the game’s release. So to celebrate it being 90 days since he last spoke about it we’re having a ‘party’ in a sense and asking people to donate money to a good cause, hopefully generating some positivity in this bleak space. Other than that the subreddit and the group of subscribers in it are some of the funniest people I’ve ever seen personally, this is a bleak situation everybody is trying to make the best out of. I recommend coming to the subreddit and having a laugh.
The catch:
We’ve decided that if Sean doesn’t speak up by the 110th day, which is in about two weeks from now, that we’ll turn the subreddit into a parody of Sean Murray, or something along those lines. Haven’t decided yet, so feel free to suggest whatever. We want him to speak, we don’t want to encourage him not to. The money will go to the Cancer Research UK which is an amazing charity.
