Donkey Kong Country was a classic game for the Super Nintendo. In gaming terms, it pushed the limits as to what people thought the console was capable of. Two sequels followed which were equally excellent, albeit the difficulty was massively ramped up.
While the more recent titles have not been anywhere near as amazing a new remake of Donkey Kong Country 2 has emerged. Utilising the Unity gaming engine, the game has been reproduced in HD graphics.
While it is of course not an official release, it does give us an insight as to what could be achieved if Nintendo decided to set their mind to it.
You might, therefore, want to set aside your SNES classic (assuming you were lucky enough to get one) and check this out.
Created by BlobVanDam, as this isn’t an officially licensed product, the bad news is that it’s unlikely we will ever see this in the public domain. Nintendo does, after all, have some rather vicious lawyers.
In the HD remake, however, he has treated us to video footage of 1 level he has recreated so far. Well, treated is perhaps a stretch, teased is possibly more accurate.
In a report via DSOgaming, it is BlobVanDam’s intention to create more levels and therefore we maybe will perhaps get at least see more of this fantastic work in progress.
If nothing else, it shows was a determined person with the Unity engine can achieve. It may even tempt Nintendo into releasing a property HD remake of the original trilogy. If someone from Nintendo is reading this though, please, make the sequels a bit less difficult.
