Doom 3 was a huge PC hit back in 2003, successfully combining horror, sci-fi and first person shooter themes to make a great game. The game was published by Activision but developed by id Software and Splash Damage. Fans are about to recieve a nice little surprise, the creator of the game John Carmack, has said he is putting the source code out their in the public domain for anyone to use free of charge. He tweeted this a few days ago:
“doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release.”
What this means is developers will be able to get their hands on the core coding for the game and develop mods and story spin offs which they can then release into the public domain for people to play and enjoy. It should also mean when someone gets around to recompiling the game from the source code that you will be able to pick up a copy of Doom 3 free of charge, although this may not be the case as we are not sure of the legal terms and conditions of the release. However, you can still pick up the game very cheaply from a wide range of outlets if you are looking to have a mess around with some developing or want to try out some future mods.
