It has been nearly 2 years since we last had our Dynasty Warriors release. Since that time, like an addict in withdrawal, fans have been gibbering wrecks awaiting the new release. Well, time to relax. Dynasty Warriors 9 is confirmed for release in early 2018.
This will, for many, represent the first true release on the current generation consoles. Yes, Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires was released on PS4, but it was, if we’re being honest, merely a higher spec version of the PS3 edition.
Basing itself around the ‘Romance of the 3 Kingdoms’ saga, both the plot and characters are really fascinating. In truth, it wouldn’t be an unfair criticism to say that each new game simply rehashes the previous, but sometimes that’s exactly what a franchise needs. Too many have learned that in gaming franchises, tampering with a winning formula often isn’t to your advantage.
Developer Koei Tecmo has said that they do plan to bring an additional level of fluidity to the combat reports PCGames. “Flow Attacks create move-set combos that differ depending on the enemy’s position and seamlessly continue when enemies become prone, are in mid-air, or stunned. Reactive Attacks are extremely versatile and can range from counterattacks, dash attacks, assaults, to guard breaks and finish moves. Trigger Attacks are powerful moves that change an enemy’s state. Attacks will change depending on the combination of buttons pressed.”
It might mean that combat might be adaptive to the scenario which will hopefully make for a smoother more fluid style. I do, however, hope that this does not mean the end of button mashing. My wife is a big fan of the series, particularly the simplistic style of combat. If they over-complicate it, she will not be happy.
It will certainly beat waiting for that 3DS version at least.
While we, unfortunately, do not have a confirmed release date as yet. We do at least know that Dynasty Warriors 9 is indeed coming with Lubu set to terrorise us once again in early 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
