I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of gamers suddenly cried out in terror: Electronic Arts are rumoured to be negotiating a deal with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt creators CD Projekt RED that could see the industry giant enter into a publishing deal with, or even an outright purchase of, the popular Polish developer.
An anonymous CD Projekt RED employee revealed to Dark Side of Gaming that EA representatives are currently negotiating a potential deal with CD Projekt RED’s management. The source revealed:
“I’m employee of CDProjekt Red and I have some bad news to share with you. Our management is probably talking with Electronic Arts about potential take over. Electronic Arts representatives are currently visiting our studio and meeting with top management. We are not going to release any game soon, so for sure it’s not about any publishing deal, so the only possible reason for EA guys being here is that they want to buy us.”
Bad news indeed, since EA has a history of buying up talented studios and either trashing them, diluting them, or closing them – just ask fans of BioWare, DICE, Westwood Studios, Maxis, Bullfrog, or Pandemic. Let’s hope that CD Projekt RED escapes a similar fate.
