Titanfall 2 is a solid game, a grand improvement on the first one, even if it is suffering from a poorly timed launch. EA has voiced that they’re committed to the franchise, possibly even a third entry in the series, but for all their outspokenness to consumers, they’ve not said a damn thing to the developers at Respawn according to Respawn CEO Vince Zampella in an interview with Glixel.
“Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is from my old studio, that I built. And they’re repackaging my old game that I built, on a brand that I built. So it’s kind of like you’re throwing it all against me. OK, I can live with it.” said Vince in regards to the Titanfall 2 release being so close to CoD. “If the question was, ‘Would I rather have this window to myself?’ Well, of course, I’m not foolish. I’m not foolish that way, anyway. In other ways, probably.” he added.
It’s a tough spot for Respawn who are being promoted by EA, who are working to push their own FPS, Battlefield 1, a strong conflict of interests to say the least. “It’s always a concern,” said Zampella “That’s what I’ll say. Especially when you have two games on top of each other.” When asked if they would make another Titanfall game he replied “We don’t know yet” and “The game is, critically, a huge success. We’re really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it’s too early to tell.”
In the interview, speaking with Vince and Devin Bennett, a publicist for EA Vince said “We’d definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that we’ll explore more of it. EA might have announced more. Devin?” to which Devin added “What we’ve said is we’re committed to the franchise.” only for Vince to snap back with “So, whatever the f*** that means.”
So yeah, doesn’t look like EA and Respawn are on open terms right now, what that means for the future of Titanfall 2 remains to be seen.
