EA to Shut Down Handful of Free-To-Play Games, Announce SWTOR Updates

In a recent news update, EA have announced that they will be stopping development and winding down support for 4 free-to-play titles in 90 days time. The games receiving the purge are: Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, Need for Speed World and FIFA World. Although upsetting to see the titles come to an end, it came as no surprise as dwindling player counts meant that the games were no longer making the company capital they once were.

Describing the games as “pioneering”, EA also thanked the community for playing the now almost deceased titles and the feedback that has allowed them to hopefully improve future releases.

In the same update, EA spoke about the future of Star Wars: The Old Republic, confirming plans to bring more story-driven game updates to the 4 year old MMORPG and also acknowledged that the “enthusiastic” community is still growing and flourishing to this day, which is rare to see in older MMORPG’s.

Although sad to see the games go, we could be seeing more options available to us soon with EA saying, “In the next few months, we are exploring new concepts and ways to bring great games to more player around the world.” What they mean by that, I’m not entirely sure, but whatever it is I’m sure it’s exciting!

Thank you EA for providing us with this information.
