EDGE Memory Announces Launch of NextGen M.2 PCIe SSD

EDGE might not be that familiar a name to everyone, but they are a US-based memory supplier and they’ve just introduced their new NextGen M.2 PCIe 2280 SSD at CES 2018. No, that’s not just a description of the drive, it’s also its name. The new drive is NVMe-powered which gives it a nice performance.

I said nice performance above, but I should probably have said incredible. The drive delivers transfer speeds up to 3200MB/s and an IOPS rating of up to 370K during random operations. Those are the read figures, the write numbers are a little lower but still impressive. EDGE’s NextGen M.2 PCIe SSD offers up to 1900MB/s when writing sequential data and up to 300K IOPS at random data.

Controller, NAND and Features

EDGE’s new drive is built with Silicon Motion’s SM2262 controller and coupled with 3D TLC NAND. The whole thing runs on a PCI 3.0 x4 interface with NVMe 1.3 specifications. Everything you’ll want from an enthusiast drive.

Feature-wise, the drive is well equipped. It comes with standards such as SMART support and wear-levelling, but also LDPC ECC and StaticDataReresh for error correction as well as DevSLP for the lowest power consumption during sleep states. EDGE also added support for NVMe secure-erase to the NextGen M.2 PCIe SSD.

Capacity Options

EDGE offers quite a few capacity options for this series. It starts out at a modest 120GB from where it goes to 250GB and 500GB. The largest versions come with 1TB or 2TB capacity. The modules are double-sided to make room for all the components.

Warranty and Endurance

EDGE backs the new NextGen M.2 PCIe SSD (Product Link) with a 3-year warranty or until the TBW are used up. However, there is no TBW rating given on the official product page yet. I’m sure that will happen before the drive actually hits the retail channels. It also features a mean time before failure of 1,500,000 hours.
