Jolly cooperation has always been one of the main key features of the vast majority of the ‘Soulsborne’ titles and that has certainly been carried over into Elden Ring. – Put simply, with either a random person or a friend, you can attempt to summon someone into your virtual world to help you traverse an area or beat a tricky boss. – One of the key aspects of this design, however, is that when the host dies, all the summoned persons (good or evil) go back to their own world and progress is, effectively, reset. No one ever said that FromSoftware games were easy after all!
Following a video posted by the YouTube channel ‘LukeYui‘, however, it would appear that a new mod is being created for Elden Ring that could potentially introduce a totally seamless COOP gaming experience.
So, how does the mod work? Well, so far as we can tell, rather than temporarily summoning someone to your world, this looks to effectively make the person a permanent fixture. – If the host dies, the summoned individual remains and can be quickly reunited with their fallen comrade. In other words, you don’t have to repeat progress, and, more so, you don’t have to rely on the somewhat clunky summoning system within Elden Ring (not that it has been fantastic in any Soulsborne title).
Overall, you’re basically sharing the same game, and, as you might expect, this does come with some problems and limitations in regards to, merely, for example, fast travel. Albeit, this isn’t a particularly huge one as a ‘voting’ system gets introduced. Many would argue though that the benefits this could bring, especially in regards to allowing two people to seamlessly play the game together, would hugely outweigh the negatives.
Well, except for one big negative in that FromSoftware absolutely hates mods. Well, that’s not strictly true, but any unusual changes to the character or game data often results in you getting a ‘softban’ meaning that the user can never access the generic summoning pool again.
Overall though, this does sound pretty cool. And although not released yet, once I have finished with Elden Ring, I might be tempted to check this out! – If you do, therefore, want to keep up with the latest news surrounding this mod, you can check out their YouTube channel via the link here!
