Elgato Stream Deck XL Review – Let’s Get Shortcut Crazy!

How Much Does it Cost?

The Elgato Stream Deck comes in a range of shapes and sizes these days. You’ve got the fantastic entry level Mini for just $99. Moving up, you can get the 15 LCD key model for just $149 and as of today, the flagship XL model for just $249. Unfortunately, we’re writing this review prior to the launch as it launches while I’m in Taipei for Computex 2019, and I don’t have retail links to hand.

Overview

The Stream Deck XL is the Stream Deck you already know and love. Compared to the mini we reviewed, it feels and looks pretty similar. Of course, there’s just a lot more of it than there was before. I don’t think too many people really need 32 buttons though, but for those that really do need a lot more, the XL is a fantastic bit of kit.

Performance

It’s really hard to say this thing is good at one thing or another, because it does so much. I could write ten more pages on this review and barely scratch the surface of what is possible. It’s like saying how many macros can you apply to any button on your keyboard… any many as you want. Not only do you have 32 buttons, but you can set multiple tasks to a button. Then if that’s not enough, you can set folders, and fill those will buttons too, and the rabbit hole just keeps getting deep from there really.

Build Quality

It’s a robust product, no doubt about that. For those working and gaming at their desks, it should withstand plenty of abuse during the course of its life. The displays in the buttons have fantastic colours and a smooth refresh rate. The membrane style switches feel nice and easy to control, but still nicely tactile too. The USB cable is detachable too, so easily replaced if damaged or lost.

Should I Buy One?

Are you a content creator and/or streamer? Then yeah you should buy one! It’s an incredible tool to have, both professionally and for fun. What size is right for you? I really couldn’t say, but the XL gives you the most flexibility for sure. Who know’s what sizes and form factors Elgato will come up with next!
