Those of you who were planning to play Elite: Dangerous using a virtual reality headset are in for a real treat, as Frontier Developments has just announced that it will implement support for SteamVR and HTC Vive through an upcoming patch. The update is set to arrive during this year’s holidays, and it will ensure support for HTC Vive at first. This makes sense considering the fact that Vive will be the first VR headset available to consumers, but SteamVR will also be supported eventually. The Chief Creative Officer over at Frontier Developments, Jonny Watts, has stated the following:
“We’re thrilled to announce SteamVR support as part of the ongoing expansion of Elite Dangerous. Back in December 2013 we were among the first to support virtual reality with a triple-A game, and for me, exploring, trading and fighting throughout Elite Dangerous’ 1:1 scale Milky Way remains an unequaled virtual reality experience. We have been working closely with Valve to bring Elite Dangerous to HTC Vive, and we are delighted with the quality we have been able to achieve.”
Chet Faliszek from Valve also had a few words to say:
“Frontier’s Elite Dangerous is an excellent example of a team leveraging the versatility of the Vive and Steam VR. Players take the helm of an amazing starship experience, and we look forward to showing it for the first time on Vive at EGX.”
Elite: Dangerous is already an incredibly immersive game, especially since it doesn’t support a third-person view of the player’s spaceship. With the help of VR headsets, space-sim fans will be able to take space exploration to a completely new level.
