Search for x.com and you will get Elon Musk’s new website. However, it currently just has 1 single ‘x’ on the whole site. Musk recently purchased his old domain name from PayPal.
Musk owned x.com back when he was co-founder over at PayPal. He then lost the domain when the company went public, the same time he left. The site currently simply displays the letter X. Of course, Elon Musk is known for his elaborate way of thinking. It is unsure just what his intentions for the domain are right now.
Speculations currently state that it may have something to do with the Tesla Model X. The latest offering of his luxurious electric car company Tesla. Other ideas are that it has more to do with his SpaceX programme, of which aims to get people to Mars at the lowest cost possible. While it is difficult to establish the reasoning behind the domain, Musk has teased on his Twitter by saying. “Excited to announce the launch of x.com! It’s a little verbose right now, but that will be fixed tomorrow.”
Single letter domain names are very rare, that is because in 1993 the international group that regulates internet domain names, ICANN made the decision to remove single letter domains from sale. Of course, there are single digit domains in use in 2017 such as Twitter’s t.co, Facebook Messenger’s m.me. However, there are only 3 .com domains, these are Q, X and Z. It is highly likely that Musk would have paid a significant price for the domain, potentially within the 8 figure range.
Musk has mentioned that x.com will be fixed tomorrow. Of course, given his reputation as a joker, it could be nothing. We will find out tomorrow once and for all. What do you think it may be?
