Epic Says Fortnite Server Issues Were Caused by Meltdown Patches

Multiplayer gaming is taking a beating because of Meltdown.

Yesterday, we reported on Intel’s efforts to fix Meltdown, but we also said that the patches could have a negative effect on some gaming servers. Well, it looks like Epic’s Fortnite has taken a serious beating due to these recent fixes. Recently, Epic has pinned the game’s login problems and downtime to Meltdown patches. Apparently, the patches are causing increased CPU use at the third-party cloud services that the title relies on. As other services are receiving the updates, gamers can expect even more annoying issues, at least according to Epic.

What can be done?

Well, the company has stated that it will do everything it can to “mitigate and resolve” problems as they appear. The problem is that Epic doesn’t have a choice but to patch the vulnerability and accept the problems that come with it. Naturally, a solution will come in time, but for now, gamers will have to put up with a rather poor gaming experience. While not ideal, this is definitely better than remaining vulnerable to serious attacks. One thing is for sure, though. The gaming industry will have to adapt, just in case problems like these will pop up in the future.
