For more than a few years now, the EU (European Union) has been making more and more overtures towards the total ban of new fossil-fuel-powered car sales. When would this happen? Well, in this regard, while a lot of regions and countries seemingly want to make this (so-called) commitment to a cleaner future, some of them set both practical and reasonable dates while others seemingly want to just say anything that might please the environmentalists (not, incidentally, that I think that ever really possible – And to hell with the actual, you know, implementation of this).
Following a report via TechXplore, however, the EU has finally given the rubber stamp to its fossil-fuel motoring ban. – Put simply, after 2035, unless the law is rescinded or amended, no new gasoline or diesel-powered car will be legally allowed for sale in the region!
Now, just to clarify the point, the EU has not mandated that all fossil-fuel-powered car sales will be banned after 2035. This new law only, and very specifically, applies to the sale of brand-spanking new cars. – With that being said, however, it’s still clearly very significant that by 2035 all car dealerships within the European Union will only be allowed to sell electric cars. And just in case you were wondering, this ban does seem to also include hybrids which, to me, always seemed like a more sensible transitional solution.
Will the EU stick to this though? Well, given that the ban is 12 years off, this could be possible. Then again, there is still clearly the question of infrastructure (charging stations), and, of course, not to mention where this power is supposed to magically come from. Particularly since we’re supposed to be committing to ‘green’ solutions.
I’m sorry folks, but you could fill the countryside up with wind turbines and I doubt it’d be able to handle a first-world nation full of electric cars. – What do you think though? – Let us know in the comments!
