The Eurocom Sky Z7 is the First PCIe 4.0 Based Laptop

EUROCOM are no stranger to high-end laptops, having a long history of creating some incredible mobile workstations. Just look at the Sky X9E3 from a few years ago, which was a “portable supercomputer”. Even back in 2014, I wrote an article about “the most powerful notebook in existence”, and it’s all from EUROCOM.

Eurocom Sky Z7

The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 is based on the Intel Z590 Express chipset, and features the latest Nvidia RTX 3000 series GPUS, up to an RTX 3080. This “Mobile Supercomputer” is available with a choice of desktop-level 11th generation, Tiger Lake, Intel CPUs (up to i9-11900K), up to 128 GB DDR4 memory and up to a whopping 32 terabytes of the fastest NVMe storage available today (PCIe 4.0 is supported). Let’s be honest here, that’s likely more powerful, a lot more powerful, than most peoples desktop systems.

  • Chipset: Intel Z490 (Comet Lake-S)
  • Processor: socketed desktop LGA1200 CPU, up to Intel i9-10900K
  • Memory: up to 128GB; DDR4- 2666/3000/3200; 4x 260- pin, 1.2V, SODIMM sockets
  • GPU Technology: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080, 2070 and 2060; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super, 2070 Super
  • Display Technology: Supports 4 monitors
  • Storage: Up to 26 TB SSD storage with 4 physical drives; 3x M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe + 1x M.2 2280 SSD via M.2 SATA Gen3 x4 / SATA
  • Communications: 2.5GB LAN RJ-45 port Killer E3000; supports Killer DoubleShot Pro (w/ Killer WLAN)
  • Card Reader: 1x microSD Card Reader
  • Keyboard: RGB Keyboard with individual key illumination; N-Key Rollover & Anti-Ghosting; Microsoft Precision Touchpad with multi-gesture two buttons
  • Loaded with Security: TPM 2.0; Fingerprint scanner; Kensington lock
  • Audio System: S/PDIF Output (Optical); Creative Super X-Fi Ultra DSP chip; Creative Sound Blaster Atlas; ESS SABRE HiFi DAC for high resolution headphone output
  • Ports: 3 x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2; 2 x miniDP 1.4; 2 x DC-in; 1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen2
  • 1 x USB-C 3.2 Gen2 x2; 1 x Thunderbolt 3.0 / USB-C 3.2 Gen2; 1 x HDMI 2.0 output (with HDCP); 1 x 2-in-1 Audio jack (Headphone/Microphone); 1 x 2-in-1 Audio jack (Microphone/SPDIF Optical); 1 x RJ-45 LAN
  • Weight and Dimensions: Weight- 3.8 kg/8.36 lbs; Thickness- 1.76”/44 mm; WxDxH- 399mm x 319mm x 44mm/15.96” x 12.76” x 1.76”

Thunderbolt 4

The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 features high-speed Thunderbolt 4 technology along with a multitude of I/O ports, unmatched security, as well as award-winning network detection and prioritization via Killer E3000, with speeds up 2.5 Gbps.

Mobile Supercomputer

This EUROCOM Mobile Supercomputer is specifically designed with fully upgradeable components featuring an upgradeable, non-MaxQ GPU (via MXM 3.1 V 2.0 technology) and desktop level CPU (via LGA1200 socket). So while this is a laptop, it’s not using that low-power mobile junk, this is proper desktop performance hardware.

PCIe 4.0 Gen4 x4 Technology

The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 will have native support for PCIe 4.0 when using 11th Generation Intel (Tiger Lake) CPUs via one of its M.2 2280 SSD slots. PCIe 4.0 Gen 4 x4 technology is twice as fast as PCIe 3.0 and double the bandwidth. More specifically, PCIe 4.0 offers up to 16 GT/s data transfer rate compared to PCIe 3.0’s 8.0 GT/s data transfer rate. With this, the Sky Z7 R2 can utilize the fastest NVMe drives available today (such as the Samsung 980 Pro Gen 4.0 x4), which delivers read speeds up to 7000 MB/s, making it 2 times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSD’s and 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs!

Plethora of Ports & Thunderbolt 4

The Sky Z7 R2 offers a wide variety of ports, such as one USB-C 3.2 Gen2 Type C, two Thunderbolt 4, three USB 3.2 Type A, two miniDP 1.4, two DC-in, one HDMI 2.0 output (with HDCP), one 2-in-1 Audio jack (Headphone/Microphone), one 2-in-1 Audio jack (Microphone/SPDIF Optical) and one RJ-45 LAN port, which adds up to a total of 14 I/O ports. Besides a large number of ports, the upgraded chipset also gives access to faster connections as well- such as USB 3.2 Gen2 x2, with transfer speeds up to 20 Gbps.

Price and Availability

Prices start at around £2200 + TAX, however, that’s basically not the model we’re talking about here. A fully equipped and tricked out version can cost upwards of £10,000, but that will get you a system worthy of a good Bond villain. Have a play around with the configurator or even be brave and order one here.
