Expect Sub-$100 Quad Core Tablets From July With New $5 Allwinner Processor

Sub-$100 tablets are about to get mainstream quad cores thanks to the latest chip from Allwinner. From July mass-production of the new quad core Allwinner A33 will begin. Interestingly, the Allwinner A33 will cost just $4.99 to tablet manufacturers and apparently Allwinner will be making reference tablets for the new quad cores that cost as little as $40 to make, so will likely sell for $50.
The Allwinner A33 chip has four ARM Cortex-A7 processor cores and ARM Mali-400 MP2 graphics. The design is pin-compatible with older A23 dual core designs meaning older tablet platforms can easily be upgraded to the new CPU. According to Allwinner they expect reference tablet platforms with the following specifications:
- 8 inch, 1280 x 800 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage
- 7 inch, 1024 x 768 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage
- 7 inch, 800 x 480 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage
The below tablets will cost around $40-50 to make so will probably have street prices below $75.
