Exploding Kittens Kickstarter Ends, Raising $8.7 Million

Card game Exploding Kittens asked for $10,000 on Kickstarter. Thirty days later, the Kickstarter funding period ended, raising in excess of $8.7 million, with over 200,000 backers. The project had already become the most backed Kickstarter ever last month, at which point it has raised $4 million from over 100,000 backers, but managed to double both its money and its backers in less than a month.

Exploding Kittens is pitched as a humorous take on Russian Roulette, with players drawing cards until a player ends up with the exploding kitten card, with which they lose the game.

The creators of the game spoke about its surprise success during a reddit AMA. They revealed that, rather than making them millionaires, the vast amount of money raised means that they’ve sold a lot of games which need to be produced and shipped. Co-creator Elan Lee wrote, “We don’t have a retail plan yet. We made a promise to more than 200,000 people to ship them this game. That’s our highest priority right now.”

Exploding Kittens is expected to ship in July this year.
