Earlier this month some rather shocking information appeared online regarding the development of Fable 4. Namely, PlayGround Games had, according to the source, completely shelved the original version of the game due to issues in getting it to work within the ‘Forzatech’ engine (the same engine utilised within the highly-popular motorsports game series).
With the leak source citing a total shift to the Unreal Engine, the clear implication of this was that the development of Fable 4 had likely been hugely pushed back to accommodate the transition. And let me make it clear, switching engines at even a relatively easy point within a title’s creation is no easy task (just look at Duke Nukem Forever for proof of that!).
So, with this in mind, has Fable 4 just been potentially kicked back a year or two? – Well, following a Twitter post from gaming journalist ‘@JezCorden‘, they’ve called out this initial source as being completely false.
In terms of leaks, this is where things get a little tricky as you have to effectively decide who you are going to believe. – Given the fact that the original leak of this news subsequently deleted the post, however, it does appear that they were in error. Put simply, Fable 4 is likely sticking with the Forzatech engine meaning that the development of the highly-anticipated game is no different now than it was before.
So, with all that being said, it does still clearly raise the question as to when we can expect Fable 4 to be released. Well, in this regard we would still recommend tempering your immediate to medium-term expectations. While it was officially confirmed back in 2020, news on the title has been exceptionally light ever since. Lest we forget as well that it was revealed right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic meaning that the title has likely, so far, only seen around a year or so’s worth of solid development.
Overall, I wouldn’t expect any significant news regarding Fable 4 until at least 2024 with a release date probably not even being confirmed until some point in 2025. – With this update, at least, and presuming it is accurate, we can at least take some solace in the apparent fact that development on Fable 4 hasn’t been hugely impacted by an engine change.
