Facebook Adds A New Security Feature To Help Prevent Scammers

Facebook adds new features to prevent scammers

On occasions, you may have received a someone legitimate-looking e-mail from Facebook. In it, they will likely either give a link to their website at which point you will be asked to log-in. There is just one problem with this in that unless you are having genuine difficulties logging into your account, Facebook will rarely e-mail you directly.

Most of these scams generally tend to focus on you being required to change your password or indeed under some false pretense that your account has been compromised. There are, after all, some people out there with really bad passwords.

In the vast majority of cases, however, any e-mail from Facebook about your account is likely the work of scammers. There is good news, however. Facebook has introduced a new security feature which will help you identify these fake e-mails.

I just need your Facebook login and Password and I can wire you the monies directly.

Email verification

In a report via CNN, the social media site has introduced an e-mail log system to your account. In it, they will detail every time they contacted you directly. Through this, you can easily identify a legitimate contact attempt and those which are not.

Put simply, if the e-mail isn’t recorded in the log, it isn’t from Facebook.

It certainly isn’t a perfect solution, but if users are vigilant, it can be used to help stop this happening to other users.

Scott Dickens, the product manager at the social media site has urged all users to report any fraudulent e-mails. This can be done by forwarding the e-mail to “phish@fb.com”.

What do you think? Have you ever received a fake Facebook e-mail and if so, what did you do with it? Has your account ever been compromised? – Let us know in the comments!
