When it comes to privacy, Facebook is definitely not the best example in the world. However, the company has just launched a brand new educational campaign that aims to change our opinion. Just in case you’re not aware, there are some new EU data protection laws about to be signed in May. Months ahead of their inauguration, Facebook has revealed its “privacy principles” for the first time. Furthermore, the News Feed will now feature various videos that show users how to control the ads that they see on a daily basis. The videos also teach how to delete old posts, and most importantly, they reveal what happens to users’ information when they delete their accounts.
The EU’s new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) say that companies have to make it easier for you to export and delete your data. Furthermore, any data breach must be reported within 72 hours. The Facebook privacy principles are not the same as the terms and conditions, though. They mostly represent commitments that the company will take care of your data as best as it can. One of the largest problems that Facebook is dealing with right now represents fake news. In order to battle misinformation, the social media giant allows users to rank publications. These rankings can help point out trustworthy sources.
Hopefully, things will change for the better soon, as privacy becomes more of a hot topic every day.
