Facebook’s Messenger is arguably the most popular social media messaging app at the moment, which is why it makes perfect sense for Facebook to try to perfect it and add new features to it. The most recent additions to Messenger definitely sound promising, as the company is testing out SMS integration as well as support for multiple accounts. Not too long ago in 2015, the app received support for making payments and hailing Uber rides, and these brand new additions are also likely to be received well by users even though they’re only being implemented on Android devices for the time being.
SMS was actually supported by Facebook Messenger in the past, but since its adoption rate was not exactly ideal, the company eventually put its development on hold. Now, the feature has a good chance of making a comeback, and judging by a screenshot provided by one of our sources, it looks like the messages received and sent via SMS will be colored purple instead of blue in the user interface. Naturally, the user can disable this color, but I think that it’s a nice touch.
When it comes to implementing multiple accounts on Messenger, Facebook’s representatives explained why they think this is necessary:
“Millions of people share phones with their family and friends. Until now, there hasn’t been an easy way for people to access their individual Messenger accounts from shared devices. To address this, we’ve launched a feature on Android to enable multiple people to log in and use Messenger from a single phone.”
There’s no word on an official release date for these new features, but you should probably expect them to appear on your Android-based device this year.
