Representing one of the few major success stories of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, with people being sat at home with very little better to do, Fall Guys quickly catapulted itself from being a relatively obscure indie title into one of the biggest gaming hits of the year. With the full release late last year and the PlayStation launch as well, however, there have clearly been more than a few questions asked from both Nintendo Switch and Xbox owners as to when they would be invited to the party.
With a release date initially scheduled for this Summer, Mediatonic has confirmed that the ports for those systems have now basically been indefinitely delayed.
Following an official announcement on their website, developer Mediatonic has said:
“With so many new opportunities now in our hands, we’ve realised that our previously announced Summer 2021 Switch and Xbox release schedule is unfortunately just too soon for us to include all of the tasty new features we’re working on.
While we want to launch on these platforms as quickly as possible, we believe the Switch and Xbox releases are really going to be worth waiting for and we’re super grateful for your patience. This delay gives our team some time to add features like crossplay, so when we add new platforms, players will be able to stumble in harmony with their pals, regardless of their platform of choice.”
Based on the statement (which you can read in full here), the overwhelming feeling I take away from this is that Mediatonic really wants to get the crossplay sorted for Fall Guys before launching any other versions. It is, after all, possibly one of the most requested features for the game, which would, at least based on the current systems, allow PS4 and PC gamers to play together.
So, sorry Xbox and Switch owners, but you’re going to have to wait a little while longer for this one. If their launch does coincide with the introduction of crossplay, however, I’m pretty sure this is going to be universally praised by Fall Guys fans regardless of their platform!
