Firaxis has revealed that one of the nine new leaders in Civilization VI: Gathering Storm is none other than Sir Wilfrid Laurier. This of course means that the next country being added to the game is Canada.
Prime Minister Laurier’s unique ability is ‘The Last Best West’. This ability allows Canada to build farms on Tundra terrain, and reduces the cost of purchasing Snow and Tundra tiles by half. Also, gathering resources from Snow and Tundra tiles yields twice the usual amount.
As a peace-loving country, Canada presents a different playstyle than other nations. In fact, their unique ability is the ‘ Four Faces of Peace’. This ability ensures that surprise wars cannot be declared against Canada.
This of course, goes both ways as Canada cannot declare surprise wars on opponents as well. This also grants bonus Diplomatic Favor based on per-turn Tourism. Furthermore, Canada receives extra Diplomatic Favor from successfully completing Emergencies or Competitions.
As for unique building and units, Firaxis goes for the most obvious and first that come to mind when you think of the Great White North: Hockey Rinks and Mounties.
Ice Hockey Rinks grant additional Appeal and Amenity. Moreover, it grants bonus Culture for each adjacent Snow, Snow Hills, Tundra, and Tundra Hills tile. Once the Flight technology is unlocked, it grants Tourism from Culture; after unlocking the Professional Sports Civic, awards additional Production and Food; and, if built adjacent to a Stadium building, grants even more Culture. However, only one Ice Hockey Rink can be within a city’s borders.
Mounties on the other hand are modern era units that have the ability to create a National Park. Mounties receive combat bonuses when fighting near a National Park, and an additional combat bonus if the National Park is owned by Canada.
The Gathering Storm DLC will arrive on February 14, 2019 and is now available for pre-order on Steam.
