Firefox 5 arrives just 3 months after Firefox 4

The Mozilla corporation released Firefox 4 beta back in June 2010 and it was only released in March this year. Firefox 4 has been slightly more buggy than people have come to expect from Firefox and as a result a new Firefox is already on its way.

Firefox 5 was opened up to Beta on June 16th and it will be officially launched tomorrow.

It is expected to bring new features, fixes and improvements such as:

  • Added support for CSS animations
  • The Do-Not-Track header preference has been moved to increase discoverability
  • Improved canvas, JavaScript, memory, and networking performance
  • Improved standards support for HTML5, XHR, MathML, SMIL, and canvas
  • Improved spell checking for some locales
  • Improved desktop environment integration for Linux users
  • WebGL content can no longer load cross-domain textures
  • Background tabs have setTimeout and setInterval clamped to 1000ms to improve performance
  • The Firefox development channel switcher introduced in previous Firefox Beta updates has been removed

For the full release notes you can get those from here.

It is also worth noting that the new Firefox 5 also brings increased performance using the Browser Benchmark it showed:

  • Firefox 4 : 3323
  • Firefox 5 : 3721

Which is a performance boost of around 10%.

You can download Firefox 5 from here but note it is currently only at beta.
