Intel’s third generation of Xeon E3-1200 processors for single-socket servers and workstations has been on the market for over a year now, 16 months to be exact, and it looks like Intel is getting ready to release two new versions over the next 18 month time-period.

The two new generation of the Xeon E3 processor will be called E3-1200 v4 and E3-1200 v5 and will be based on the Broadwell and Skylake architectures that boast improved CPU efficiency, better graphics and support for more memory.

Xeon E3-1200 v4 series will most likely be available in the second quarter of 2015 and will be compatible to the current Denlow platform and C220 series chipsets. The v4 is built on Broadwell and features a quad-core processor with hyper-threading and up to GT3 graphics. The embedded cache is increased to 128MB and the DDR3 memory support is increased to 32GB. It will be manufactured in the current LGA package.

The Xeon E3-1200 v5 series will most likely be released sometime in the second half of 2015 and be part of the new Greenlow platform. They are going to utilize the C230 series chipset and be launched in an LGA package at first to ensure compatibility with the socket 1151. Just like the v4 they will feature up to 4 cores with hyper-threading technology, but only up to GT2 graphics. They are going to work with both DDR3 and DDR4 memory and have up to 64MB onboard cache.

At a later time, most likely the beginning of 2016, Intel will introduce the BGA version of the Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors to feature GT4 graphics, 128MB eDRAM cache and only support DDR4 memory.
