First wave of Bulldozer Opterons mapped out

AMD announced in September that it would begin shipping Bulldozer-based Opteron processors for the enterprise and server market. Unsurprisingly they have started with the lower end models first so the 4200 Series codename “Valencia” models are being launched and the “Interlagos” models will come later. The 4200 series Valencia Opteron processors come with either 6 or 8 cores and are targeted at small to medium size enterprises, they only function in single or dual socket servers unlike the Interlagos models which can go in quad socket servers and have up to 16 cores in each CPU. Much like Intel has QPI lanes which allow more than one CPU to work alongside another AMD has given these two “Hyper-Transport” lanes allowing them to work together in a pair or on their own. The Interlagos Opterons will have four HT lanes.

The CPUs all have an ACP of 75W or under (note ACP is average consumed power not TDP).  The most interesting of the models is the 4256EE which has 8 cores at 2.5GHz consuming only around 32W of power, a step towards exceptional performance per watt which servers really need. The Opteron 4284 is the “Fastest” of the models with 8 cores at 3GHz running off about 75W. The Interlagos variants should come at a later date this year.
