Fitbit Speaks out on the Exploding Flex 2 Situation

Nobody wants to worry about their favorite gadget exploding during regular use, but after the Note 7 fiasco from Samsung, it looks like Fitbit is taking a bit of heat as well for a particular incident involving a Flex 2. We already told you about this situation a few days ago, and it appears that Fitbit has decided to address the issue early on by claiming that there’s no way the device just exploded on its own.
According to Wisconsin resident Dina Mitchell, the Flex 2 exploded on her wrist while she was merely sitting down and reading a book, thus causing second-degree burns on her wrist. However, Fitbit’s representatives say that the malfunction was caused by external forces.
“Based on our initial investigation, including testing of her device by a leading third-party failure analysis firm, we have concluded that Ms. Mitchell’s Fitbit Flex 2 did not malfunction. The testing shows that external forces caused the damage to the device.”
“The health and safety of our customers is our top priority and, as such, Fitbit products are designed and produced in accordance with strict standards and undergo extensive internal and external testing to ensure the safety of our users.”
Moreover, it looks like the Flex 2’s lithium polymer battery did not overheat after all, and the company is urging its customers to keep wearing these devices without fear, especially since no one else has reported similar situations. Since there are probably millions of these wearables out there that are currently functioning properly, it’s likely that this was just an isolated incident. We’ll definitely keep you posted as the story develops, though.
