AMD’s Bulldozer took over the reigns of the current beloved Phenom II line up back in late 2011, marking the uneasy transition from 45nm to 32nm. Now AMD is slowly trying to phase out the slower and less popular models Phenom II processors, it will still sell Phenom II processors but with less models available on the market the transition to Bulldozer is made more clear.Five processors get the chop, two from the Phenom II X4 range and three from the Phenom II X2 range.
AMD’s best gaming CPU the X4 955 is one of the processors to face the axe, this one survives until December 2012 due to higher demand. The other X4 to get the chop, the 965, survives only until September as the higher price point always meant that this chip sold much less than the 955.
The three dual core Phenom II X2 processors that get the chop include the 555, 560 and 565. All of AMD’s dual core Phenom IIs were based on quad core dies with half the cores disabled, normally due to them being broken, but sometimes lucky buyers would be able to unlock additional cores. All three of these parts face the axe in December 2012.
This move brings the end of the popular Phenom II processor line ever closer. The full chop list is below:
