Psychonauts, commercially, was a failure. This was a pity because as a game it was awesome and over the years have garnered itself a well-deserved reputation as one of the best gaming failures of all time.
Why it didn’t do commercially well was for a number of reasons. However, it was a bit of a mystery within the industry since the reviews were pretty much overwhelmingly excellent. Then again, Toonstuck and Grim Fandango were also excellent games which the critics loved but the shops didn’t.
Tim Schafer is a big name in gaming, however, had struggled to get the money for a new game in the Psychonauts franchise. One quick crowdfunding project later via Figs and Psychonauts 2 was in development.
The game received nearly $4m in crowdfunding, which clearly demonstrates just how loyal a fanbase this title has. With the man himself at the helm too, the hype-train for this title is building steam.
In a report via Polygon we can now see our first glimpse of in-game footage and from what we’re seeing, it looks awesome!
Unfortunately not. Zak McClendon, who is the project lead for Psychonauts 2 has said that at present they have about an hour and a half of workable in-game footage. “This first-playable [version] is the first time we’ve taken a designed chunk of the game and tried to push it through the pipeline and get it fully art’d. It represents all of the gameplay systems, all of the art, and a few more new things.”
For fans of the series, this footage will be great news. It clearly shows that while in a modern graphical capacity, it appears that they are very much attempting to emulate the style of the original.
At present, there is no firm release date for Psychonauts 2. However, it is anticipated for release at some point in the latter half of 2018.
