When you have a game series that has been running for so long, it can often be difficult to keep it innovative. From Fifa to Call of Duty, developers are always endeavouring to attempt to find something new to add to something. It wouldn’t, however, be unfair to say that simulation games have it the hardest. Particularly a game like Football Manager. In a very unusual step, however, a beta of Football Manager 2018 appears to show that players can now come out as ‘gay’.
Football Manager is a great series, but one in a significant danger of stagnating. I used to be a colossal fan of the series, however, I’ve struggled to enjoy the more recent iterations. The overwhelming depth of the game, while massively enjoyable to some, has completely stripped the fun for me. I was a casual fan and enjoyed the casual play, therefore the announcement that FM 2018 will be even more in-depth does nothing to give me hope.
In fairness to Football Manager 2018, they are planning a lot of new features this year including:
For many though, the developers have to work more on attracting the casuals back because, at the moment, the only real fans are the hardcore.
For all the things fans may be expecting, one thing I can almost guarantee you were not is the option that your player/s might come out as gay. In a report via PCGamesN, however, that’s exactly what they can do. Recently Linux compatibility for the game was a great, but unexpected feature. This, however, is on an entirely another level.
In fairness, it does highlight a major problem within football and sport in general. Statistically, depending on who you listen to and their research, about 10% of the population is homosexual. Based on a football team having 11 outfield players and 6 substitutes, multiplied by 20 teams (just in the UK premier league), that is 320 players. Of all of these, would you care to guess how many are currently openly gay? not a single one. Despite the fact that statistically at least 30 should be and mathematically at least 1 has to be.
Depending therefore on how you approach this, you can view this in different ways. It is either a bizarre feature or an endeavour to promote homosexuality in football.
