Technology is more reliant on touch-screen displays than ever before, and with the continual improvement of Gorilla Glass, which offers incredible scratch resistance and these days it’s also very tough to break than it was just a few years ago. Then there is Sapphire glass, which is even stronger, but hasn’t been given widespread adoption yet. However, for truly next-gen display durability a company called Akhan Semiconductor say’s their diamond coating for glass is almost ready for release. Could this mean it’s going to be the big contender for Corning’s recently announced Gorilla Glass 5?
Akhan Miraj NCD Diamond Material is said to offer four times the crack resistance, and seven times the scratch resistance of Gorilla Glass! On top of that, it’s also easier and cheaper to produce than sapphire glass, as it can use synthetic diamonds in a thin layer over standard UV glass, ironically made by rival Corning. Amazingly, thanks to the chemical vapor deposition technique used to essentially grow the diamond layer, the NCD glass is around 800x thinner than a Gorilla Glass 5 panel and is still stronger than Sapphire glass at that thickness.
With Akhan Semiconductor saying they should have the tech to scale production within a year, the future is promising. They’re even looking for a partner to do their production, so we may even see them license it out to Corning anyway… Gorilla Glass 6 perhaps?
