The Legacy of Kain franchise has been largely ignored by developers over the last few years, but some fans were appeased by the idea that a free-to-play spin-off was in the works. Named Nosgoth, this was a multiplayer action game developed by Psyonix and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows. Sadly, the title has been officially cancelled during its beta testing phase, and Square Enix has recently delivered the news on its forums.
“It is with a heavy heart and an immense sense of sadness that we must announce the end of Nosgoth’s development. Servers will continue to run until 31st May 2016, during which time you will be able to play the game as normal. After that date, Nosgoth will be taken offline for the last time.”
Square Enix also provided an FAQ, which clearly states that players will still be able to enjoy the game until May 31, albeit without being able to make any real-world purchases. Moreover, purchases made since March 1 will be refunded entirely, which seems fair. The game certainly wasn’t the worse in the world, but it didn’t really represent Legacy of Kain properly. Those games were incredibly well-made and impressed with great stories and voice acting, which is why a simple F2P title could not possibly do them justice.
