French Company Using Ryzen PRO to Heat Homes for Free

Cooling is one of major choke points for CPU processing power. Effectively, the cooler the better. However, what if, rather than cooling a processor, we used the heat it generates? French company Qarnot is taking this concept to its logical conclusion. Qarnot is unveiling a new home heating system that generates its heat through CPUs. Specifically, the technology uses cloud-connected AMD Ryzen PRO chips to heat homes and offices for free.

Using Ryzen PRO to Heat Homes

Qarnot heats spaces using the Q.rad intelligent radiator. In fact, the Q.rad contains three Ryzen PROs. The internet-connected radiator serves part of Qarnot’s cloud-computing network. The French company, amongst other things, provides 3D rendering and VFX for film studios. As Qarnot crunches data, free heating is provided to your home.

On its website, Qarnot explains:

“Have you ever noticed that your personal computer was producing heat while processing tasks? At Qarnot, we decided to take advantage of this waste heat to deliver it directly to buildings. Qarnot designed the Q.rad, the first computing heater embedding microprocessors as a heat source and connected to the Internet.”

Qarnot’s Cloud Computing

The idea is revolutionary. Reusing heat in such a manner reduces Qarnot’s carbon footprint and provides free heating for homes and offices. In addition, it reduces Qarnot’s server space overhead, so both parties benefit. In a blog post, Qarnot says:

“As an innovative decentralized cloud services provider, the quality of our processors is paramount to offer maximum performance to our clients. Qarnot’s cloud is based on a disruptive infrastructure: the Q.rad, a heater embedding three CPUs as a heat source. We reuse the heat they generate to heat homes and offices for free. Q.rad is connected to the Internet and receives in real time workloads from our in-house computing platform.

Our main business at Qarnot is to provide a cloud computing platform which is able to send heavy workloads to any kind of computer, server or heater. We mainly target two industries with massive computing power needs: movie studios for 3D rendering and VFX, and banks for risk analysis. For example, BNP Paribas run 5% of their financial risk analysis on our platform.”
