Frictional Games Clarifies SOMA’s Upcoming ‘Safe Mode’

SOMA game developer Frictional Games is providing more details about the announced ‘safe mode’ in the game. The award-winning existential deep-sea horror game is one of the most engrossing games ever, with a remarkably compelling narrative and scare-you-to-the-core horror. In fact, it is Frictional Games’ best yet, besting even Amnesia: Dark Descent according to some fans. That’s a tall order considering Amnesia: The Dark Descent has a 10/10 perfect score on Steam. SOMA has a 10/10 perfect score as well, with 100 more ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ user reviews on Steam.

Monsters are Still There

The director of SOMA, Thomas Grip spoke to PC gamer about the upcoming update. Unlike what some fans thought, the monsters will still be present in the game. They will not be taken out entirely, but they also will not just be standing around. This is a game that requires keeping the dreadful atmosphere after all. The new safe mode basically takes out the factor dying with encounters. Grip adds that “there’s still a sense of hostility in these creatures”.  They are still dangerous if the user pushes their luck too much.

According to Grip, they are comfortable adding the safe mode since “the experience with meeting the creatures does not really add anything to the theme”. These creatures help build the atmosphere, but they do not necessarily add more to the theme of identity and consciousness.

In case you still have not played the game, SOMA is currently 65% off via Steam’s Autumn Sale.
