Future Versions of CRYENGINE Will Support DX12 and Vulkan

Those of you who are fans of CRYENGINE already know that Crytek made this particular engine open source not too long ago, and now it looks like its future versions will actually take significant steps forward as far as DirectX12 and Vulkan support are concerned. To be more specific, CRYENGINE 5.2, which is expected to become available this month, will offer complete support for the DirectX12 API, while the upcoming CRYENGINE (5.3), which will be launched mid-October, will fully support Vulkan. Just in case you’re interested in more details, we’ll tell you that version 5.2 will support DX12 Multi-GPU for VR while offering quite a few other features:

  • Scaleform Flash natively in DX12.
  • Partial RenderElements in new pipeline.
  • Fog/Clouds/Waters in new pipeline.
  • Deferred Decals in new pipeline.
  • AuxRenderer natively DX12.
  • VR Multi-GPU support.
  • Tiled shading optimization (using light volume rasterization.

DX12 Renderer

  • Forward pass to use new pipeline.
  • SVOGI converted to graphics pass.

As far as version 5.3 goes, it will boast several improvements to its SVOGI tech, and it will offer Vulkan support as well as virtual memory resource management, improved Dynamic Env Probe and Env Probes workflow. All we have to do now is wait for developers to take advantage of these new features in order to deliver nicely optimized and immersive games.
